How to start or where to end, these are sometimes the hardest things to create. A blank page or canvas can seem intimidating or overwhelming at times but it doesn't have to be that way. If the challenge to create feels like too much maybe you are approaching it the wrong way. Your body is a powerful machine that is capable of almost endless possibilities but without the spark to get that machine moving it is just an oversized paperweight. If this is the case, where is that spark? While it can seem elusive it is always within you waiting for the right time to power you forward into any task that may be ahead.
This spark is your creativity. For some this spark has been dormant just waiting for the day the owner allows it to show it's true power. While others have a spark that is nonstop like a strobe light continually lighting up their next idea. No matter where you are on the spectrum your creativity will always be there for whenever you need it the most. Whenever this spark seems to be dead and gone forever many consider this to be writer's block. Almost everyone has encountered this in one way or another but the real question is how do we get our spark back?
Consider you're trying to start a fire with just some flint and debris, how would you go about this to guarantee success? First off you'd want to make sure the environment i good and your supplies are dry. Same with your internal spark, if the environment is not conducive to allow your creativity to flourish it will be near impossible to create anything that lives up to your full potential. This is the most unique step for everyone; you may be someone who needs a quiet part of their home, a calm spot outside, or the roar of a busy city. Wherever it is that allows your spark a chance to ignite going there should be your first step.
Upon creating the perfect environment, next a spark will need oxygen to become a fire. If your creative space is perfect but you're still stuck maybe give your spark some room to breathe. Taking a walk, reading a book or playing a game are all ways you can let your creativity take some time off and recharge. You may also be throwing to much at yourself like throwing a log onto an ember. Start small and nurture what you do have so it can grow into something that burns brightly.
Starting this flame can be a slow and tedious process but once it gets going you are able to enjoy all the warmth and light that it provides. While there is much to be gained from your spark there is also much that it takes so you must know when to let it burn low. This may the most common route to go about but with everything there are exceptions. Spontaneous combustion is like a shower thought or an idea as you are drifting to sleep unpredictable and quick. For some impatient fire starters an igniter like gasoline may be used or for us creatives a nice large cup of coffee will help get this warmed up.
However it is you nourish your spark make sure you take good care of it since it is what brings light to your life and everyone else who has the pleasure of enjoying its warmth.
I hope my fire can help you start yours,
Austin Myers
