When do you want to get dinner? How long is the Movie? What day is it? Time has provided us with a useful way to make sure everyone is on the same page and is understood by all. While distance, weight, or temperature measurements can vary from place to place a second where you are is a second everywhere else on this planet. If time is measured the same everywhere why doesn't it seem that time is equal? The weekend is never long enough, the workday slowly creeps by and vacations are over in an instant. The measurement of time may be the same but our perception of it varies greatly from day to day and task to task.
Understanding time's many variation leads us next to question how do we control the time that we are given? The easiest way to do this is using time itself to help us by creating a schedule. While this seems like a boring approach it is the most effective. Unless you are part of the minority that have extreme self control to stay on task or already have a built in routine, a schedule might be your first step to time freedom. Giving yourself a set time to accomplish tasks will help prevent you from distractions such as 30 minutes to clean your room, 10 minutes to fold the laundry etc. In this current day an age the majority of us find ourselves starting and ending our days in the same way; staring into the bright light of our phone. While this has simply become a habit for most you can rewire your brain to do anything you would like. In theory this is simple but actually changing a habit will take weeks to months to accomplish. At first it can seem discouraging but see it as the possibility for a new life or simply fast forwarding the progress you want to make towards your current goals.
We all know that starting your day in the right direction helps guide your day but few of us actually set ourselves up for success. Giving yourself a new morning routine will change your life drastically if you choose correctly. Making your mornings a time that is truly yours before the world has its influence is a step towards personal freedom. While everyone's goals and days look different you can always find something that works for you whether it's a morning stretch, a quick chapter or a healthy breakfast find where you are laking and tackle it first thing in the morning.
You have complete control when scheduling your morning but as for your job most of us don't have much of a choice in changing how and when we tackle our tasks. The day can drag on if you are bored, out of it or just in a mood but if you can change your attitude towards your job this is the fastest way to change how "long" you are working. These negative feelings can make everyday at work seem like a Monday just counting the hours until the end of your shift or your next day of freedom. Why not make everyday work for you? Simply giving yourself a mental goal will help speed up your work day while also maintaining your personal progress. Most of us do this subconsciously as day dreaming but if you direct your thoughts towards a specific purpose you can use spare time for yourself in any situation.
Outside of your job is when the real magic of life happens, if you allow it to. Asides from days off the average person sleeps and works for two thirds of their preretirement life, so this last third should be special. Once you know what you're looking for in this life how you spend your free time will become very apparent. For some this can be family time, time in nature, reading, hobbies etc. Whatever your thing may be it comes with an unfortunate caveat, time goes fast when you're having fun. Don't let this discourage you from immersing yourself in the enjoyment that life has to offer. While you may want to spend your spare time relaxing with a new show, game, or book scheduling time for this activities will allow you to make sure you don't get behind on the other tasks of your life. After an episode wash the dishes, before the next chapter clean the kitchen, after the next save point take out the trash. However you need to organize your life make sure there is balance and you will be pointed in the right direction.
You may feel the world is always putting pressure on you to keep moving and making but sometimes you need that rest to keep from being overwhelmed. If you don't allow yourself the time take it slow maybe you should schedule it in; whether that's a nap, coffee break or your watching the wind blow. Never feel obligated to do anything since this is your life and time is what you make of it.
Today is the only day you are guaranteed so what will you do with it?
